Rosatom and Vietnam Prepare for Construction of Ninh Thuan-1 NPP

Project documents are undergoing final approval, and the parties are discussing the feasibility study

Russia and Vietnam are entering a new stage of cooperation in nuclear energy — documents for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Vietnam are being согласование, according to the Russian Ambassador in Hanoi, Gennady Bezdetko. According to him, intergovernmental agreements are in the final stage of preparation, after which the parties will proceed to the development of a feasibility study for the project.

We are talking about the resumption of the Ninh Thuan-1 nuclear power plant project, the implementation of which was suspended about eight years ago. Previously, the program was frozen due to financial difficulties, a decrease in electricity demand and a drop in prices for traditional sources, but in 2024 the Vietnamese Parliament gave the project a "second wind".

Russia, represented by the Rosatom State Corporation, is ready to begin the active phase of cooperation after the completion of legal procedures. The Vietnamese side also shows interest in technological and educational cooperation: about 300 Vietnamese specialists in nuclear energy who have been trained in Russian universities have already been trained.

The development of the project takes place against the background of strengthening Russian-Vietnamese partnership in various fields — from energy and trade to military-technical cooperation. During the visit of the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu to Hanoi, the prospects for joint projects were discussed, including nuclear energy, personnel training and the transition to settlements in national currencies.

The resumption of the construction of the Ninh Thuan-1 NPP will be an important step in ensuring Vietnam's energy security and strengthening Russia's position in the Southeast Asian region.
