AvtoVAZ is exploring the possibility of creating a hybrid power unit for the new Lada Azimut crossover, which is scheduled to start production in 2026. This was announced by the company's president, Maxim Sokolov.
According to him, the plant has all the necessary competencies to develop electric vehicles, but the current volume of the Russian market does not ensure the economic feasibility of mass production of purely electric models. Therefore, the main focus is shifted to hybrid technologies. The decision to introduce a hybrid engine on the Azimut will depend on the market situation and the profitability of the project.
AvtoVAZ already has experience in the field of electric vehicles: the portfolio includes prototypes of Lada Largus, Aura and Niva Travel in electric versions. Lada Azimut was fully developed by Russian specialists and was first presented in the summer of 2025 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The company continues to explore various business cases and technologies, while remaining ready to produce electric vehicles if economic conditions in the market improve.
