The GTD-1250 gas turbine engine of the Russian main battle tank T-80BVM allows the combat vehicle to be started even at −50 °C. The power plant makes the tank less noticeable when moving, said military expert Vasily Dandykin.
He explained such capabilities by the special design of the power unit, which makes the T-80BVM ideal even for Arctic conditions.
One of the main advantages of the T-80BVM is the gas turbine engine, which does not require preheating. Even at extreme temperatures down to −50 °C, it starts the first time, demonstrating high reliability.
Dandykin clarified that the GTD-1250 was created on the basis of an aviation engine, which provides not only easy starting, but also low noise levels.
However, the GTD-1250 also has disadvantages. The main disadvantage is higher fuel consumption at idle. When moving, when the GTD-1250 operates at optimal speeds, the combustion processes in the diesel engine and turbine are similar. However, this problem can be solved with digital control of the unit. Recall that the production of T-80BVM with GTD-1250 was revived in Russia in 2024.
