Iran and Russia have signed an agreement worth $25 billion (over 2 trillion rubles) for the construction of the Hormoz nuclear power plant (NPP) in the Hormozgan province in the south of the republic.
The agreement was signed by Nasser Mansour Shariflu, representative of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, and Dmitry Shiganov, representative of JSC "Rosatom Energetic Projects".
The Hormoz Nuclear Power Plant will consist of four power units. An area of 500 hectares has been allocated for the construction of the new plant.
In early 2025, Iran proposed to Russia to expand the cooperation agenda in nuclear energy. Russia already has one large nuclear power plant project in Iran, Bushehr. Its first power unit with a capacity of 1000 MW was handed over to the Iranian customer in 2013.
In 2016, construction began on the second stage, which includes power units II and III with a total capacity of 2.1 thousand MW. Work on power unit II was planned to be completed in 2024, and on power unit III in 2026.
