Russia is reaching a new level in nuclear energy: at the international forum "World Nuclear Week," Russian President Vladimir Putin announced ambitious plans for the development of Russian nuclear technologies and international cooperation in this area.
One of the important announcements was the construction of the world's first nuclear power system with a closed fuel cycle in the Tomsk region by 2030. This system will allow for the multiple use of up to 95% of spent fuel, which will significantly reduce the formation of radioactive waste and almost completely solve the problem of uranium supply. The project is being implemented as part of the strategic direction "Breakthrough" based on the BREST-OD-300 reactor with a capacity of 300 MW with fast neutrons and a lead coolant.
Putin also emphasized that Russia is preparing for the serial production of small nuclear power plants - land-based and floating. Such installations open up opportunities for local power systems, regional development, and commercial projects, including nuclear tourism and providing energy to large data centers. Russia, according to the president, is the only country with a full cycle of competencies - from uranium mining to the design and operation of nuclear power plants.
The international aspect of the development of the nuclear industry was also in the focus of the Russian president. Putin noted that equal access to peaceful nuclear technologies ensures sustainable global development and helps countries of the Global South and East strengthen their industrial potential. At the same time, Russia does not make its partners dependent on its decisions, but contributes to the creation of sovereign nuclear industries with personnel training and competence centers.
The President of the Russian Federation pointed to safety as a key factor: requirements for each stage of the nuclear cycle will be strengthened, including uranium mining, reactor operation, and waste management. Nuclear power plants of Russian design are considered one of the most popular in the world due to their reliability, environmental friendliness, and resistance to external influences.
Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko confirmed that the construction of the second nuclear power plant in Belarus will be implemented jointly with Russia.
We will build it together with the Russians, because they taught us how to do it.
Russia has already turned Belarus into a "truly nuclear state," he emphasized.
