Cutting Inserts for Submersible Electric Centrifugal Pumps Created at Virial Company

The products are used in the extraction of hard-to-recover oil

Virial Company from St. Petersburg has created domestic multifaceted cutting inserts for submersible electric centrifugal pumps (ESP), used in the extraction of hard-to-recover oil. Previously, such inserts were supplied exclusively from Europe, and difficulties with imports stimulated the development of Russian analogues.

ESPs are high-tech units up to 40 meters long. Their working parts are actively worn out due to the abrasive effect of rock particles raised to the surface along with oil and groundwater. Key parts of pumps are made of Ni-Resist, a special alloyed cast iron resistant to high temperatures, but extremely difficult to process.

To develop domestic inserts, Virial conducted reverse engineering of European products, created new grades of hard alloys and insert shapes that meet the requirements of Russian consumers in terms of strength and durability.

Field tests have shown high reliability and durability of the products. In addition, the inserts allow for high-performance turning at cutting speeds of 400–600 meters per minute.
