A new method for cleaning tanks from oil sludge using microwaves has been developed in Omsk. Scientists from Omsk State Technical University (OmSTU) have patented a prototype of a microwave (ultra-high frequency) generator, which includes an electromagnetic wave generator, a short-circuited waveguide, a coaxial cable, and a biconical horn radiator.
The main advantage of the new technology is the local heating of oil sludge, which avoids large heat losses and significantly reduces heating time. Traditional methods, such as heating with steam or water, lead to one cubic meter of oil sludge turning into tens of cubic meters of waste. The new method minimizes this effect, reducing energy costs due to lower heat losses.
Developer Andrey Sekachev noted that this technology can be used not only for cleaning tanks, but also for liquefying construction bitumen and other highly viscous hydrocarbons. This opens up new opportunities for the transportation and processing of hydrocarbons, especially in the difficult climatic conditions of the Far North.
