Nornickel Launches New Gas Treatment System at Kola Site in Monchegorsk

The 6.9 billion ruble project aims to reduce environmental impact

Nornickel has launched a high-tech gas treatment system in the dust collection department of the refining shop at the Kola site in Monchegorsk. Investments in the project amounted to 6.9 billion rubles.

The system is equipped with four modern four-field electrostatic precipitators of Russian production; the share of domestic equipment reaches 98%.

The main goal is to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from the fluidized bed furnaces of the refining shop. The project will reduce SO2 emissions by almost a thousand tons per year.

The construction of the facility began in December 2022 and included the construction of a building and the installation of equipment. Additionally, the system will allow the return of non-ferrous metals to production and improve the quality of sulfuric acid.

The project is part of Nornickel's comprehensive environmental program on the Kola Peninsula, the total funding of which will exceed 71.7 billion rubles by 2031.
