Machine learning algorithms accelerate the design of vaccine candidates and help identify biomarkers of early stages of diseases

The National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" is developing vaccines using artificial intelligence technologies. Scientists are applying structural biology methods in combination with machine learning algorithms to calculate the structure of vaccine candidates. This allows them to reduce the stages of exploratory synthesis and reduce the cost of time and resources. The final synthesis and testing are carried out in the prescribed manner.

According to the document, calculations have been completed for three vaccine candidates against African swine fever, one candidate against a new strain of coronavirus, and one against dengue fever. Calculations for a vaccine candidate against Lyme disease are also nearing completion.

New research centers have been included in the structure of the institute in recent years, and the project further clarifies the areas of work in epidemiology. In addition to vaccines, research is planned for non-infectious diseases - neurological and mental disorders, oncological and cardiovascular diseases. In particular, the institute will look for new biological markers for the detection of preclinical and early stages of Alzheimer's disease using machine learning and AI. Work is also planned to combat herpesviruses, cytomegalovirus, and Epstein-Barr virus.

Briefly about dengue fever: this disease is common in the tropics and subtropics and is transmitted by mosquitoes. According to WHO estimates, approximately 100–400 million cases of infections are registered annually; most are mild or asymptomatic, but in some cases severe, potentially fatal complications are possible.
