The State Corporation "Rosatom" and the Ministry of Energy of Niger have signed a memorandum of understanding. The document aims to develop the peaceful use of atomic energy and the introduction of high technologies. The agreement was the result of a visit by the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation, Sergei Tsivilev, to Niamey, the capital of Niger.
The goal of cooperation is not only uranium mining, but also the creation of a comprehensive system for the development of the nuclear industry in Niger. The Minister of the Russian Federation emphasized:
Our task is not just to participate in uranium mining, we must create a whole system for the development of peaceful atom in Niger. This includes the construction of power generation so that it is accessible to every resident of the country, and cooperation in the field of nuclear medicine. We also agreed on joint training of specialists in this field.
The parties also agreed to train specialists to work in this area. During the visit, the Russian delegation, which included representatives of businesses and departments, met with the President of Niger, Omar Tchiani, Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, and Minister of Mines, Ousmane Abarchi. They discussed the creation of an intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation and projects in energy, transport, infrastructure, agriculture, and mining.
Niger, which ranks seventh in the world in uranium production, has reserves of over 5,000 tons, especially in the northern regions. The country is interested in small and medium-sized nuclear reactors, which are being developed by "Rosatom". Minister Abarchi noted that Niger is studying these technologies to strengthen its energy sector.
