Solar activity is in a declining phase, and the peak of the current, 25th solar cycle, has passed. This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The data received in May 2025, apparently, finally confirms that the maximum of the current 25th cycle has passed. Solar activity is currently in a pronounced declining phase, which, tentatively, will end only around 2030.
The sunspot number index (the main indicator for measuring the solar cycle) sharply decreased last month to the minimum value since August 2022 and amounted to 79 units, while in April it remained around 140 units.
Despite the decline in solar activity, scientists emphasize that this phase will still be accompanied by the risks of major flares and magnetic storms at least until 2027.
Earlier, www1.ru reported that one of the strongest plasma ejections in recent years was recorded on the Sun.
