Technology for obtaining materials for creating lightweight batteries created at St. Petersburg State University

In the new material, charge accumulation and release occurs with 99% efficiency

A new technology has been developed at St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU) that allows the creation of lightweight batteries that are not inferior in their technical characteristics to lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones. The basis for the manufacture of these batteries is a current-conducting polymer.

The structural units (monomers) of the polymer base are interspersed with hydroquinone molecules. This ensures maximum saturation of the battery with charge. Two out of three molecules in the resulting polymer act as charge accumulators, which allows achieving a high battery capacity - from 85 to 112 milliampere-hours (mAh) per gram of material. This value is comparable to the capacity of lithium-ion batteries, which averages 140 mAh per gram, while lead-acid batteries have a capacity of 50–60 mAh.

In the resulting copolymer, the processes of accumulation and release of charge associated with hydroquinone fragments occur with 99% efficiency. This means that almost all the charge spent on charging (oxidation) of the material is returned during its discharge (chemical reduction).

Professor of the Department of Electrochemistry of St. Petersburg State University Oleg Levin noted that the theoretical limit of the capacity of the new material may exceed 200 mAh. This opens up prospects for further research and development in the field of battery technologies.
