Russia is preparing for significant changes in the field of QR payments. In the near future, users will be able to make payments abroad, starting with Kazakhstan. Users will be able to scan a QR code and choose a convenient payment method.
How will this work using Kazakhstan as an example? A Russian bank sends a payment message to the National Payment Card System (NSPK). It will be converted into the format of the Kazakh payment system, for example, Kaspi QR. The amount is converted at the agreed "ruble-tenge" rate, which is fixed daily by the regulators of both countries. Then the payment goes to the acquiring bank of the point of sale, and the settlement between the central banks takes place through offsetting mutual claims.
For the client, the process will look the same as when using the Faster Payments System (FPS). Stores abroad will accept this QR code as a regular local payment instrument.
This model is less vulnerable to sanctions pressure than traditional card payments. Foreign banks operate in their local systems, and the Russian side acts as a protocol developer, which avoids direct interaction with international payment systems.
Thus, a unified QR code can become a powerful tool for simplifying payments abroad, opening up new opportunities for Russian users.
