Capacity Shortage: IT Companies Face Data Center Scarcity in Moscow and the Moscow Region

The server rental market is shrinking due to the growing demand for AI technologies and the high costs of building new data centers

In Moscow and the Moscow Region, there is a sharp reduction in available capacity for IT system rentals. Most data centers are already occupied by companies working with artificial intelligence. Developers are in no hurry to build new facilities due to high costs and long payout periods. Difficulties with connecting to power grids and the high cost of financing exacerbate the situation, creating a capacity shortage.

According to Selectel, demand for IT infrastructure is growing due to the active development of products with AI, which require significantly more energy. Server racks for such technologies can consume up to 40 kW, which is several times higher than normal indicators.

There is also increased interest in data centers in the regions. RTK-DC noted that this is due to the growing confidence in large providers and the popularity of modular solutions, which are built faster and require less investment.

Analysts at NF Group predict that by 2025 demand for capacity will continue to exceed supply, and new facilities in Moscow will begin to launch only by 2026–2027. In the context of a shortage of leased capacity, companies are increasingly considering the possibility of creating their own corporate data centers.
