The entry of this ship into service will increase the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy.

The governments of Russia and India signed an intergovernmental agreement in October 2016 for the construction of two Project 11356 frigates for the Indian Navy from among those originally built for the Russian Navy at the Yantar Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) in Kaliningrad, as well as the construction of two additional subsequent Project 11356 ships in India at the state-owned shipbuilding enterprise Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa.

The main strike weapon of the 11356 frigates is a universal shipborne firing complex for eight missiles. In the domestic version of Project 11356, each frigate carries one universal shipborne firing complex for eight Kalibr-NK and/or Onyx missiles each.

The Indian frigates will be armed with BrahMos anti-ship missiles of Russian-Indian production. Previously, the Yantar Shipyard and the Baltic Shipyard had already built six Project 11356 frigates for the Indian Navy.
