Low Costs and Stable Supply: Domestically Produced Solvent for Oil Purification Created

New technology will replace imported solvents on the Russian market

Scientists from Perm Polytechnic University have created a technology for producing a solvent for oil purification. The new product will be able to replace imported analogues on the Russian market.

Methyl ethyl ketone is used in the oil purification process to create industrial oils, motor lubricants, paints, varnishes, and cosmetics. It promotes even application of the oil and its rapid evaporation, which speeds up the drying process.

Russia does not have its own production of this solvent, and imports are associated with high costs and logistical difficulties. Scientists at PNRPU have developed their own manufacturing technology that can not only reduce costs but also ensure stable supplies for domestic enterprises.

The process of producing a domestic solvent includes several stages:

  1. Mixing benzene with 2-butanol (a type of alcohol).
  2. Adding a catalyst.
  3. Oxidation of the substance upon contact with air.

A distinctive feature of this method is the use of pure 2-butanol, which reduces the likelihood of side reactions that can lead to the formation of substances requiring additional purification.

As a result, two products are formed at once: the methyl ethyl ketone solvent we need, as well as phenol — it is necessary for cleaning oils from aromatic compounds. This is more profitable than producing each of them separately.
Yulia Rozhkova, scientific supervisor of the project, associate professor of the Department of Chemical Technologies of PNRPU, whose words are quoted in the message.

Earlier, Tomsk scientists, together with divers from the Marine Rescue Service, tested a new device "Vodolaz" for lifting oil and petroleum products. The equipment automates the process of collecting fuel oil, reducing the load on divers.
