Uzbekistan and Russia will begin designing the Trans-Afghan Railway. It will create new, shorter transit corridors between Southeast Asia and the CIS countries, China, and Europe. This was reported by the press service of the Russian trade mission in Uzbekistan.

Design bureaus of Uzbekistan and Russia will jointly design the Trans-Afghan Railway. Routes through Afghanistan will become part of the Termez - Mazar-i-Sharif - Kabul - Peshawar railway, which will create new, shorter transit corridors and connect the markets of Southeast Asia with the markets of the CIS countries, China, and Europe.

The Trans-Afghan Railway project will reduce the time and cost of freight transportation by 30-40%. The new route connecting Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan will become part of the North-South transport corridor. According to preliminary estimates, the North-South route will be 30% cheaper and 40% shorter than the traditional route through the Suez Canal.
