Probability of magnetic storms is increasing: giant prominences are approaching Earth

Solar matter will "arrive" to our planet on the night of April 15-16

Two giant solar prominences are flying towards Earth. They were ejected into space from the Sun on April 13, according to the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of IKI and ISZF.

According to calculations, solar matter will reach Earth on the night of April 15-16. The most likely time of arrival is tomorrow, the 15th, around 22:00 Moscow time.

Solar prominences are giant filaments of dense gas, reaching hundreds of thousands of kilometers in length. They float in the Sun's corona, held in place by magnetic fields.

These ejections can be one of the main causes of powerful magnetic storms, and their mass can have a strong impact on the Earth's magnetosphere. However, prominences are not always able to completely detach from the Sun - sometimes they return to its surface.

Currently, the configuration of the interplanetary magnetic field favors the occurrence of auroras. The probability of observing them on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday (with early arrival of solar matter) and on the night from Wednesday to Thursday (main scenario) is one of the highest in recent months. This event may attract the attention of astronomers and nature lovers who want to see this natural phenomenon.

Earlier www1.ru reported that the Sun staged a fireworks display of 39 flares, almost half of them class M.
