Engineers at Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have found a way to reduce the size of a device for measuring magnetic fields used in aircraft navigation systems—a magnetometer—by a factor of three.
The scientists proposed an improved magnetometer design that makes the device three times more compact than traditional sensors. The solution will improve the navigation systems of aircraft that correct their course along magnetic lines.
We replaced the coil shape with a short section of fiber only 10 m long, closed in a ring, i.e., an optical resonator. Thanks to it, even with a short length, light travels a great distance due to multiple revolutions. This significantly reduces the size of the device.
In the future, domestic devices may become an affordable alternative to existing foreign counterparts, combining high accuracy with small dimensions.
