A unique operation, during which Chinese surgeon Qi Jin remotely eliminated arrhythmia in a patient located 4.5 thousand kilometers away, took place in Novosibirsk. It was performed using Russia's only Stereotaxis robotic system, which allows manipulating cardiac structures using powerful magnets.
Alexander Romanov, Deputy General Director of the Meshalkin National Medical Research Center (NMRC), said that the operation was carried out under the strict supervision of the Russian team. Before the intervention, a 3D model of the patient's heart was created. This made it easier for surgeons to accurately plan their actions.
During the hour-and-a-half procedure, the Russian-Chinese team of doctors maintained constant contact via a special video link. Surgeon Qi Jin controlled the robotic system with a computer mouse, which replaced traditional hand control.
Anesthesiologist Vladimir Baboshko added that special equipment was used during the operation to work near a strong magnetic field. The patient was conscious but anesthetized and able to communicate with doctors.
The operation was a continuation of successful cooperation between medical institutions in Russia and China. In June 2023, the first surgical operation via video link already took place, when a Novosibirsk surgeon operated on a patient from Shanghai.
