Chepetsky Mechanical Plant Resumed Production of Channels for RBMK Reactors

Zirconium alloy and argon-arc welding — new technologies for safe and durable reactors

Chepetsky Mechanical Plant (JSC ChMP) in Udmurtia, which is part of Rosatom's Fuel Division, has been qualified to produce control and protection system channels for RBMK reactors. This is due to the extension of the service life of the reactors, and the plant has resumed production of this important product.

These channels are located in the core of RBMK reactors and are responsible for regulating power and safety. They contain sensors and control rods of the control system. Extending the life of such reactors helps to save money and strengthens energy security.

The plant has developed a new technology for manufacturing channels. They are made of zirconium alloy and corrosion-resistant steel, using argon-arc welding of thin-walled stainless steel. All products undergo strict quality control. Serial production of these channels began this year.

RBMK reactors have already generated about three trillion kWh of electricity for Russia, and currently seven such reactors are operating in the country. Each of them generates 6–8 billion kWh annually.

Modernization and extension of the operation of these reactors remains an important part of the strategy for the development of nuclear energy in Russia.
