In Russia, hiding license plates on a car now results in a one-and-a-half-year license suspension

President Vladimir Putin signed a law that significantly increased the penalty for those who like to hide their license plates

Russia has tightened the penalty for using devices to hide car license plates. The corresponding amendments to federal legislation were signed today, October 14, by President Vladimir Putin. The laws in their new form are effective from the moment of signing.

According to the amendments, driving a car with license plates"equipped with devices that prevent their identification or allow them to be modified or hidden" now results in the driver's license being revoked.

If the violation is recorded for the first time, the device for hiding license plates will be confiscated, and the driver will be deprived of their license for a period of one to one and a half years. If the driver is caught a second time driving a car without license plates or with hidden license plates, they will be deprived of their license for up to one and a half years.

Previously, driving with hidden license plates or without license plates in Russia was punishable by a fine of 5,000 rubles or revocation of the driver's license for a period of one to three months.
