Russia Considers Participation in the Construction of the Sinop NPP in Turkey

Rosatom is already in dialogue with Turkish authorities about possible details of such a project

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told reporters that Russia is actively studying the possibility of participating in the construction of the second Turkish nuclear power plant, Sinop.

According to him, the successful joint work on the Akkuyu NPP project opens up opportunities for expanding and strengthening cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. At the same time, Russia is "ready to continue to be a reliable partner in the development of nuclear generation in the country".

Rosatom and the relevant Turkish ministries and departments have organized a dialogue to study the details of such a project. We are convinced that, based on the existing experience and developments on the Akkuyu project, we will be able to provide the Turkish side with the optimal solution.
Alexander Novak, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia

The possible construction of a second nuclear power plant in Turkey by Russia, in addition to the Akkuyu NPP, became known in February 2024. According to the head of Rosatom State Corporation, Alexey Likhachev, Turkey had by that time made "a political decision" to transfer the site for the construction of the second nuclear power plant to the company. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also repeatedly spoken in favor of the construction of the Sinop NPP by Russia.
