The Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) has launched the "North Pole-42" expedition in the Arctic Ocean. The unique world's only ice-resistant platform "North Pole" moored to the edge of an ice field of about 165 square kilometers on September 30. Scientific equipment, transport, and machinery have now been unloaded onto the ice, and a scientific camp has been set up there to conduct research.
The meteorological laboratory was the first to start working in the ice camp, from where the first weather report was sent to the "mainland" according to a long-standing tradition. Immediately after that, the grand opening of the drifting station "North Pole-42" took place — the polar explorers raised the Russian tricolor on the ice in the Arctic Ocean. Under the influence of currents and wind, the "North Pole" research vessel frozen into the ice and the scientific ice camp will move to the circumpolar region and further towards the Greenland Sea. After reaching open water in the Fram Strait, presumably in the spring of 2026, the vessel will return to Murmansk on its own.
It is known that the scientific program of the "North Pole-42" expedition contains more than 50 different scientific projects aimed at studying changes in the Arctic environment and assessing the degree of vulnerability of ecosystems. Research will be conducted using modern equipment, including domestic unmanned aerial vehicles.
