The Baltic Federal University (BFU) named after Kant, in collaboration with specialists from the East Kazakhstan Technical University, has developed a material to protect oil pipelines from corrosion. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.
The coating includes apple pectin and synthesized microparticles based on silver and copper.
Experiments have shown that these particles effectively bind sulfur-containing organic compounds. Since substances containing sulfur atoms are present in oil and lead to metal corrosion, the development will help protect pipelines and other equipment in contact with oil from premature destruction.
Experiments have shown that bimetallic microparticles in the new coating effectively protect the metal from corrosion. Scientists plan to apply a layer of microparticles to the surface of the pipeline body and transport oil through it. It is expected that the durability of the new development will be commensurate with the service life of the pipes.
