The Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has proven itself as the eyes of Russian artillery at the front. The reconnaissance drone combines versatility and reliability, becoming one of the pioneers of Russian military unmanned aviation. Authors of www1.ru analyzed the advantages and technical characteristics of the device.
The Orlan-10 is launched using a catapult, which can be installed on a flat surface, various types of landing ships and army vehicles. The long-term operation of the UAV is ensured by an on-board gasoline internal combustion engine. The flight can take place under the control of the operator via a radio channel or in automatic mode according to a pre-programmed program. In the event of a break in connection with the operator, the Orlan-10 does not fall, but switches to autonomous operation.
For a successful landing, the Orlan-10 is equipped with an air cushion and a parachute, which reduces the risk of damage to expensive equipment. In different cases, the drone is equipped with a payload either at the factory, then the equipment cannot be changed, or it has a special "adapter" that allows you to add other types of load.
The Orlan-10 corrects artillery fire, solves mapping problems, and also conducts shooting in the visible and thermal imaging spectrums. The device can find targets both day and night.
