Sea Vessels on a 3D Printer: First Yacht Model in Russia Printed in St. Petersburg

Additive technologies were used in the production

Specialists from the Krylov State Research Center (KGNTs), with the assistance of TotalZed LLC and the Vympel Shipyard, used additive technologies (a method of creating three-dimensional objects by adding material layer by layer) to create the first 3D yacht model in Russia. This was reported by the KGNTs press service.

The test model was the Ореn-800 sports yacht of the Еlf-800 project, its length is 8 meters, width is 2.55 meters. The vessel was developed by KGNTs specialists Andrey Kosorotov and Mikhail Mataruev.

The production took place in three stages. Scientists studied several dozen types of plastic and chose PETS (polyethylene terephthalate copolymer with the addition of carbon fiber). It had high strength, adhesion and a low shrinkage coefficient.

At the second stage, the specialists equipped the 3D printer with a screw-type printing head developed by TotalZed LLC. The new element made it possible to increase the printing speed and reduce material consumption. This was achieved by printing at an angle of 45% and excluding supporting structures from the yacht hull model.

Modern mass-produced printer models are significantly limited in volume and can create structures with dimensions of about 1x1 meter, which is clearly not enough for printing full-scale hulls of sufficiently large sizes. A unique 5-coordinate milling machine with numerical control, which is used in KGNTs for processing ship models and has a working volume of up to 12*3*1.75 meters, was used as a basis.

After scientific and experimental study, the yacht model was optimized for 3D printing. The creation process proceeded smoothly, within three days, this time is planned to be reduced to 1 day.

Enterprise specialists emphasized that they plan to further develop and use additive technologies for the serial production of marine equipment and drones.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that a new Russian metal 3D printing technology has been patented.
