Russian Railways (RZD) has introduced measures for the safe transportation of animals following the story of the cat Twiks. The mobile application now allows users to specify the nickname and type of pet when booking tickets for long-distance trains, the company said. RZD promised to improve the system in January of this year.
A representative of RZD clarified that the new option is only available for Android-based smartphones. Apple smartphone owners will not be able to use it, as the "RZD Passengers" application has been removed from the App Store. The company noted that the option will appear on the RZD website in the future.
RZD planned to change the rules for transporting animals after the incident with the cat Twiks, which occurred in January 2024. The pet escaped from its carrier and wandered around the train car traveling from Yekaterinburg to St. Petersburg. The conductor mistook the animal for a stray and released it from the car at a station in Kirov. Twiks was later found dead.
