There are over 30,000 outdoor cameras operating in Russia to record traffic violations. The devices have already been trained to recognize more than 60 types of violations, including talking on the phone, not wearing a seatbelt, and stopping in unauthorized places. 3,000 of the cameras used to record traffic violations are controlled by the "Urbandtech" Group of Companies.
In an interview with AUTONEWS, Alexander Dombrovsky, Director of the Road Safety and Analytics Department at "Urbandtech" Group of Companies, discussed which violations "smart" cameras already recognize and what they will be capable of soon. According to him, the system's learning algorithms continue to improve and refine.
Photo and video recording systems can even be trained to recognize a driver who is texting while driving, not just talking on the phone.
Testing of photo and video recording systems is based on the analysis of many images. It took Moscow two years to train the neural network. The system already distinguishes between right-hand drive and left-hand drive cars, so there should be no confusion if a passenger is using the phone. However, the final decision on whether to issue a fine or not is made by a traffic police officer.
All photo and video materials from photo and video recording systems, after the pre-processing stage by the neural network, are reviewed by a traffic police inspector, who makes the final decision on issuing a fine. Any doubts of the inspector are interpreted in favor of the driver.
As previously reported, scientists at the South Ural State University have trained a neural network to recognize the faces of people who are trying to hide from surveillance cameras.
