В России возродили производство «летающих» танков Т-80 с двигателем ГТД-1250: названы минусы проекта

A significant disadvantage of the power plant is the high fuel consumption at idle

Since 2024, Russia has revived the production of T-80 tanks with gas turbine GTD-1250 engines. Power plants provide torque and high power, despite their light weight and compact size.

The gas turbine starts easily even at low temperatures and has a simpler design than a piston engine. The exhaust gases are practically invisible to the naked eye, and since the turbine generates high-frequency sounds, it is practically inaudible at long distances.

Disadvantages of the engine

However, the power plant also has disadvantages. The main disadvantage is significantly higher fuel consumption at idle. When driving, when the GTD-1250 is operating at optimal speeds, the combustion processes in the turbine and diesel engine are similar. The problem can be solved with digital control of the unit.

Characteristics of GTD-1250:

  • Maximum power — 919 kW
  • Maximum torque — 448 kgf*m
  • Engine weight — 1050 kg
  • Specific fuel consumption — 225 g/hp
  • Oil consumption — no more than 0.2 l/hour
  • Assigned resource — 1000 h

What will the updated tank be like

Apparently, there is no talk of returning to the original cast turrets yet. It would be possible to use the T-90M turret system, welded from rolled armor plates.

But there is an even better idea — a unified combat module for the T-80 and T-90M, previously proposed as part of the "Burlak" program.

According to information from open sources, the only serious change may be the installation of a special armor module in the frontal part, possibly unified with the T-90M "Proryv". The same "Relikt" dynamic protection blocks can be installed on the hull and turret.

In the West, the tank was nicknamed "flying" for its famous acceleration to 80 km/h.

Earlier www1.ru reported that footage of the flight of the X-101 strategic missile for the Tu-160 and Tu-95MS has appeared.
