Rosaviatsiya demanded an unscheduled inspection of some PS-90 family engines after identifying a risk of pins falling out in the turbine. Airworthiness Directive No. 2026-FATA-02074-07, dated September 22, 2026, applies to 53 PS-90A, PS-90A-76, and PS-90A1 engines on 29 Il-76, Tu-204, Tu-214, and Il-96 aircraft operated by nine operators.

The reason for the inspection was damage to the low-pressure turbine of a PS-90A-76 engine on Il-76TD-90VD RA-76511 of Volga-Dnepr Airlines on February 14, 2026. According to the UEC technical solution, the cause was the dislodgement of pins securing the nozzle guide vane sectors of the third stage of the low-pressure turbine. In total, the document names three engines with the identified problem: another PS-90A-76 was prematurely decommissioned after similar damage, and a PS-90A after the discovery of missing pins.

UEC attributes the defect to poorly performed repairs of the nozzle guide vane sectors combined with improper rolling of the repair outer rings. The risk applies to engines that underwent major overhaul between 2016 and 2024, and the problem may manifest after more than 100 cycles. For new engines, according to the technical solution, this defect is not characteristic.

The prescribed inspection must be carried out during the next scheduled B-check maintenance. Specialists must inspect the gas generator casings for recessed, protruding, or missing pins securing the split rings of the third stage low-pressure turbine nozzle guide vanes. Pins covered by the bleed air system pipes must be inspected with a video endoscope, and the results recorded with photos or video and sent to ODK-Aviadvigatel and ODK-Perm Motors.

The criteria are strict: if a pin is recessed by more than 1.5 mm or protrudes beyond the outer surface of the casing, an act must be drawn up and the materials sent to UEC for a decision on further operation. If a pin is missing, the engine is ordered to be removed from service.

The inspection is not limited to fasteners: the technological map provides for the inspection of the gas generator and turbine casings, units, pipelines, wiring, and connections. Separately, it is necessary to check for possible cracks in the casings of the second-to-sixth stage turbine nozzle guide vanes, as well as fuel and oil leaks and damage to pipelines and brackets.

The list includes five Il-76s, eight Tu-204s, nine Tu-214s, and seven Il-96s. Among the operators are Volga-Dnepr, Red Wings, Sky Gates, Pochta Rossii, Business-Aero, IFK, and the Yu. A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. Red Wings will have engines inspected on two Tu-214s (RA-64518 and RA-64549) and Tu-204 RA-64043, and Sky Gates on two Il-96-400Ts (RA-96101 and RA-96103): the engines of these aircraft were repaired in 2023–2024. The engines of all five Volga-Dnepr Il-76s were repaired in 2016–2017 and 2023–2024.

However, the directive does not ground the aircraft: the inspection will be combined with the next scheduled maintenance, and the issue of further engine operation will be decided with a representative of the manufacturer. Following the inspections, ODK-Aviadvigatel must submit an analysis of the engine condition to Rosaviatsiya.
