Contrary to a common myth, the PD-8 aircraft engine is not a reworked version of the Franco-Russian SaM146. The power units have fundamentally different designs, despite belonging to the same class, aviation expert Roman Gusarov explained to "Pervy Tekhnichesky".
According to him, the technical solutions of SaM146 could not form the basis of PD-8, as the original base was completely different.
Nothing was taken at all. It's completely different. As for the hot section, we did not produce it and could not have taken it. Corresponding technologies were not previously produced in Russia.
Gusarov recalled that the development of PD-8 started even before 2022. Therefore, its further development is not related to copying SaM146, but to accumulating its own technological and operational base.
Andrey Patrakov, former Airbus auditor and head of flight safety service RunAvia, explained that the economic sense of re-engining SaM146 with PD-8 remains highly questionable.
