Students of the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) have developed a new design for the flap extension and retraction mechanism for the Il-96 aircraft. The activity took place within the framework of the discipline "Project Activity," said Alexander Mironov, a second-category engineer at AO "Il".

According to him, the students worked with data as close to reality as possible during the task.
They independently performed the necessary calculations and created their own gearbox design, based on the existing version installed on the Il-96-300 aircraft.
Aviation expert Oleg Panteleev explained that the Il-96-400M with PS-90A engines does not attract interest from Russian airlines, which have chosen similar wide-body aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. This situation effectively makes the airliner "unnecessary" in the domestic transportation market.
Earlier, "Pervyy Tekhnicheskiy" in a large overview article compared the capabilities of the Il-96-400M with the global benchmark for long-haul efficiency – the Airbus A350-1000.
