The new MC-21-310 airliner must be renamed to Yak-242, because this brand is known and respected in the West. This opinion was expressed by Major General, Honored Military Pilot of Russia Vladimir Popov.

According to him, Russian brands should be used in aircraft names.

I still hope that the MC-21 will be named "Yakovlev" – Yak-142 or Yak-242, something like that. This will truly be a brand name. I have repeatedly been on business trips to the USA, Canada, and other countries, and these aircraft brands are highly respected there.

Popov added that in the case of the name "Superjet", it also sounds too "pro-Western". He believes that the names of airliners should reflect the names of the design bureaus where they were created.

Earlier, the Public Movement "Veterans of Russia" proposed renaming the MC-21 and Superjet SJ-100 to "Yak-121" and "Yak-100" respectively. They explained that such a measure would help reflect belonging to Russian aircraft manufacturing and historical heritage instead of English-language names.

However, MC-21-310 designer Vitaly Naryshkin denied a direct connection between the aircraft and the Yak-242.
