Russia is negotiating with India to promote two aircraft at once – the regional Il-114 and the MC-21. This approach could evolve into a larger industrial cooperation project, explained Lyudmila Chernomazova, an expert at the Stavropol branch of the Presidential Academy.
According to her, the Indian side is interested not only in acquiring equipment but also in deep production integration. This could involve technology transfer and the creation of an after-sales service system.
The simultaneous promotion of the entire lineup – from the regional Il-114 to the promising MC-21 – indicates a paradigm shift. Russia is moving from one-off deals to forming a long-term ecosystem of presence in one of the world's largest aviation markets.
India has a population of over 1.4 billion people. The local aviation market is growing at an enormous pace: for comparison, in the 2025 fiscal year, local Indian airlines transported 165.38 million people on domestic flights, and in 2026 – 167.74 million passengers.
Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Alexey Gruzdev, noted that Russia aims to secure a firm contract with India for the supply of Il-114-300 and SJ-100 within a year.
