The development of industry in Russia in the near future will lead to an increased demand for computing power. This opinion was expressed by Deputy Head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade Vasily Shpak at the event of the data center community “MYOtrasl. A 360° View”.
In particular, industrial Internet of Things technologies, machine vision, and systems for improving production models will be especially in demand, he explained.
The level of digitalization of Russian enterprises provides room for maneuver here, and the application of these technologies is already demonstrating economic efficiency.
Russia will need large data centers (DPCs), but they must be built based on a domestic technology stack, Shpak emphasized. Already now, developments are appearing in the country for creating computing capacities that can compete with foreign IT solutions for data centers, he added.
At the same time, Russian manufacturers must adhere to the principles of open architecture so that users do not depend on the solutions of a single vendor. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is ready to support developers of engineering, energy, and ventilation equipment for DPCs, Shpak concluded.
According to Alfa-Bank's analysis, in 2026, the data center market in Russia will grow by 15-20% due to the rising cost of server rack rentals. Currently, their total number is almost 90 thousand units. This year, another 4.5 thousand racks are expected to be put into operation. According to Law No. 244-FZ, from March 1, 2026, information about all DPCs must be entered into the register of the Russian Ministry of Digital Development.
