Solar flare activity reaches M-class level again, magnetic loops observed

Experts warn of possible geomagnetic disturbances

Solar activity has once again reached the level of M-class events. According to astronomers at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the first M5.9 flare occurred around 01:24 Moscow time — the most powerful of the three registered in the last nine hours. A significant increase in the number and power of flares on the Sun is possible during the day.

This is the first flare of this class since November 16, 2025. The power of M5.9 is approximately 59% of the threshold of the strongest category X.

Experts note that the intensity of the flares is still developing relatively mildly compared to the events of three weeks ago. Then, active regions on the far side of the Sun immediately began releasing a series of X-class flares, causing powerful magnetic storms. Currently, the main active zones are behind the edge of the solar disk, and less powerful "secondary" active centers are emerging towards Earth.

Region 4274, which will be the main source of future flares, is still hidden behind the edge of the Sun, but its magnetic loops are already visible from the north side. Scientists predict that activity may increase in the next 2–3 days, and then solar emissions could cause geomagnetic disturbances on Earth.

It is possible to observe the current flares in a relatively calm mode, experts note. The aesthetic side of the events and the grandeur of solar processes allow astronomers and amateurs to admire the beauty of magnetic loops and plasma ejections, until they reach full power.
