MC-21-310 Will Still "Lose Weight": Excess Weight Will Be Shed from the PD-14 Engine

Carbon Fiber VCU-65 Will Help Aircraft Manufacturers

Specialists from UEC-Saturn (part of the United Engine Corporation of the Rostec Group) are working to reduce the weight and improve the characteristics of the new PD-14 engine for the MC-21-310 aircraft using the new VCU-65 carbon fiber. This was reported in the UEC press service.

Igor Ilyin, Chief Engineer of UEC-Saturn, recalled that VCU-65 is the second material in Russia that allows the manufacture of parts from polymer composite materials using the thermoforming method.

We are also currently working on manufacturing the upper and lower sectors for the PD-14 engine using this method.

Retired Major General, military pilot Vladimir Popov of the Russian Federation, explained that the MC-21-310 was initially overweight due to the requirements for the strength of the aircraft structure. In the future, the weight will be reduced through modernization, aviation expert Roman Gusarov noted in a comment to «Первому техническому».

As a reminder, in the first import-substituted modification, the MC-21-310 will have a flight range of up to 3,800 km instead of the originally planned 5,100 km.

Also, aviation expert Andrei Velichko clarified that the production rate of the MC-21-310 will depend on the production of a sufficient number of PD-14s.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that half a billion rubles were recovered from the manufacturer of PD-8, PD-15, and PD-35 aircraft engines.
