On the night of October 7-8, the sky over Russia will be illuminated by the first autumn supermoon — a rare astronomical phenomenon when the Moon approaches the Earth at a minimum distance and appears especially large. According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI and ISZF RAS, this will be one of the most spectacular full moons of the year.
A supermoon is observed when the Moon's orbit brings it as close as possible to Earth. At this moment, the diameter of the satellite visually increases by about 13%, and the brightness increases by a quarter. This is noticeable to the human eye — the Moon looks not only larger, but also significantly brighter.
The full moon will occur at 6:47 Moscow time on October 7, but you can observe an unusually bright disk both the night before and after. Astronomers advise looking for the Moon in the east immediately after sunset — it is there that it will rise above the horizon, creating an impressive contrast with the evening sky.
The autumn season of supermoons will last until January. The next bright nights are expected on November 5 and December 4, and the series will end on January 3, 2026 — when the Moon will once again be as close as possible to Earth.
