The understanding of the lack of armor in the BMD-4M, given the presence of explosive ammunition of 100-mm shells adjacent to the landing force, emerged in the spring of 2022, according to the Telegram channel "Military Informant."
The management of JSC "SKBM" (developer of the BMD-4M) set the task of developing measures to increase the level of protection, allowing to increase the survivability and effectiveness of the vehicle on the battlefield.
In the annotation to the work, it was directly stated that the characteristics of the basic model raise many questions. In particular, due to the need to maintain the possibility of landing from transport aircraft, the vehicle is virtually devoid of armor, which makes it vulnerable in modern combat conditions.
Subsequently, the authors of the project assessed the damage received at that time by the BMD-4M, as a result of which they developed additional protection.
At the same time, the developers were driven into the framework of the need to take into account the air-drop capability and buoyancy of the vehicle, which affected the level of additional protection.
