Yandex Robotics has developed and presented a prototype of the first Russian mobile robot order picker for warehouses. The device is designed to automate the most labor-intensive stages of product assembly.
The robot is able to independently move around the warehouse, find the necessary boxes on the shelves using a computer vision and vacuum gripping system, and then transport them to the loading area. It stacks the boxes on a pallet, calculating the optimal layout according to the "Tetris" principle. The device works at the same pace as a human, independently bypasses obstacles and safely interacts with employees.
According to the company, the robot can perform up to half of the operations required to complete an order. This allows staff to be freed up to solve other tasks, such as order formation and shipment. The device does not require changes to the existing warehouse infrastructure.
Pilot tests of the robot order picker in the warehouses of Russian retailers are scheduled for the period until the end of 2026. In the future, the functionality of the machine is planned to be expanded: it will be able to scan barcodes, pack pallets and process large volumes of cargo.
