More than 100 Sunken Ships to be Recycled in the Far East over Five Years

The work will be carried out as part of the federal project "General Cleaning"

The large-scale environmental campaign "General Cleaning" continues in the Far East. Currently, work is underway to eliminate three sunken vessels: one is located in the Kamchatka Territory, and two are in the Sakhalin Region, in the area of the ports of Kholmsk and Korsakov. At the same time, work on two objects in the Kamchatka Territory has already been successfully completed.

Raising each sunken vessel is a unique process. Ship-lifting documentation is developed for each of them. It describes the types and methods of work. For example, towing to the shore is used, followed by its disposal on the shore, or divers dive to the sunken vessel, install booms inside the vessel, pump air into them so that the vessel begins to float to the surface.

A zone is created on the shore for dismantling ships. Metal components are sent for recycling, and non-metallic materials, fuel and petroleum products are taken to specialized landfills for safe disposal. To prevent environmental pollution during the lifting and disposal of ships, special floating barriers (booms) are used, consisting of floats, a skirt and weights. These barriers reliably localize possible spills of petroleum products and fuel residues from sunken vessels. The entire process is controlled by representatives of the seaport, rescue services, the Ministry of Emergency Situations and Rosprirodnadzor.

As part of the federal program "General Cleaning" (part of the national project "Environmental Well-being"), it is planned to dispose of 103 vessels in six Far Eastern regions from 2025 to 2030: Kamchatka and Primorsky Territories, Sakhalin and Magadan Regions, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.
