Perm Design Bureau "UEC-Aviadvigatel" has developed innovative thrust reverser grilles for the new Russian PD-14 aircraft engine made of Russian-produced carbon fiber, the United Engine Corporation (UEC, part of Rostec) said.
Such grilles are much lighter than titanium ones — with a grille ring diameter of up to two meters, the entire set weighs less than 50 kg.
The latest technologies guarantee strength — the grilles are made of continuous carbon fiber, have a cellular monolithic structure and can withstand temperatures from -55 to +110 °C.
The thrust reverser of the new domestic PD-14 aircraft engine is for the first time in Russia made with an electric drive, the corporation reminded.
The thrust reverser of an aircraft engine is necessary to reduce the speed of the aircraft. When it is off, the gas flow comes from the engine nozzle, creates thrust and pushes the aircraft forward. When the reverser is turned on, the engine thrust vector changes — the gas flow jets are redirected towards the direction of the aircraft's movement and reduce its speed.
