On August 11, 2025, a new version of the Rules for Registration of Domain Names in the .RU and .РФ zones came into force, allowing the use of characters from 17 state languages of the republics of Russia. The changes were approved by the Coordination Center for National Domain of the Internet.
Now, in the .РФ domain, it is possible to register addresses with letters of the Abaza, Adyghe, Altai, Bashkir, Buryat, Ingush, Kabardino-Cherkess, Kalmyk, Komi, Mari, Tatar, Tuvan, Udmurt, Khakass, Chechen, Chuvash, and Yakut languages. This will allow for a more accurate reflection of the peculiarities of writing and pronunciation in Internet addresses.
One of the important tasks facing everyone who ensures the growth and development of the Internet space today is to ensure linguistic diversity, thanks to which more and more users are gaining access to the network.
Technical support for the innovation was provided by the Technical Center of the Internet. According to its representatives, the update is aimed at preserving linguistic diversity and simplifying Internet access for the multinational population of the country. Major registrars, including Рег.ру and Руцентр, are already ready to provide the service.
Earlier, on July 11, 2025, the President of Russia signed a decree on supporting linguistic diversity in the digital space. Studies have shown the demand for such symbols among users.
The introduction of 25 new characters is another step for the further development of the .РФ domain and its popularization among Russian users. The very possibility of writing website names in the native language supports the principle of multilingualism and cultural diversity in the Russian segment of the Internet.
The Coordination Center for .RU/.РФ Domains manages the registration rules in these zones and the development of Russian domains.
