Specialists from Perm Polytechnic University (PNIPU) have discovered that the level of electromagnetic radiation in the cabin of Chinese hybrid cars may exceed permissible standards. The highest rates were recorded during acceleration — the electric field strength reached 200 V/m, which is 8 times higher than the safe limit.
The study was conducted in different driving modes: during acceleration, braking, and while stationary. During active maneuvering, the radiation level increased significantly, while at rest it remained within the normal range. The main sources of electromagnetic fields in hybrid cars, according to scientists, are the traction electric motor, lithium-ion batteries, and inverters.
The peculiarity of electric transport is that currents of significantly greater strength (up to hundreds of amperes) flow through its power cables than in conventional cars, which creates corresponding powerful electromagnetic fields.
According to SanPiN, prolonged exposure to radiation exceeding 25 V/m can negatively affect health. Scientists noted that the existing protection systems in hybrids require improvement, especially for high-load modes.
The results of the study are published in a scientific article. The work is aimed at improving the electromagnetic safety of vehicles.
