Russia will gladly participate in the construction of a new nuclear power plant (NPP) in Turkey. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak at a meeting with Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat in Moscow, where a meeting of the intergovernmental commission of the two countries was held.
Novak noted that a study of the economic feasibility of building a new nuclear power plant is currently underway, which is an important step towards achieving mutually beneficial economic models.
Russia will be very happy to participate in the implementation of this project.
Turkish authorities are negotiating the construction of two new nuclear power plants with five countries, including Russia. According to Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, the final decision on projects in Sinop and Thrace is expected in 2025. The Turkish politician previously emphasized that it is impossible to do without Russia's experience in the field of nuclear energy.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously stated that agreeing on the parameters of Russia's participation in the construction of the Sinop nuclear power plant would be beneficial for both Moscow and Ankara. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also discussed the details of the new project at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Astana in July 2024.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced in May the difficulties associated with financing the construction of the Akkuyu NPP, which are caused by anti-Russian sanctions. He stressed that Turkey, as an exporter of industrial products, needs reliable sources of energy.
