Scientists from the Ioffe Institute, SPbSTI(TU) and LETI have developed a new method for creating gadolinium orthoferrite nanocrystals — a unique material for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This material combines the properties of two types of MRI contrast agents, which allows you to simultaneously obtain bright and dark contrast in the images.
For MRI, either gadolinium-based substances are usually used, giving a bright (positive) contrast, or iron oxide-based substances — for a dark (negative) contrast. However, the use of two different substances at the same time is undesirable due to the risk of side effects. The new gadolinium orthoferrite (GdFeO3), which contains gadolinium and iron ions, combines both of these effects in one particle.
Scientists have used modern synthesis methods — ultrasonic and microreactor co-precipitation — to obtain homogeneous nanocrystals with minimal impurities. Studies have shown that such particles have the necessary magnetic properties and provide high contrast. This opens the way to creating safe and effective bimodal MRI contrast agents of a new generation, which will make diagnostics more accurate and comfortable for patients.
