MTS to Launch Russia's First Dedicated LTE/5G Network for Airports in Sochi

The network is designed for 10,000 devices and eliminates overloads in emergencies

MTS will deploy Russia's first dedicated LTE/5G Ready network at Sochi Airport. Unlike standard public networks, the project will provide guaranteed coverage of critical areas: runways, apron, and internal terminals. To do this, three LTE standard base stations will be installed, ready for the transition to 5G.

The system is initially designed to serve 1,500 subscriber devices (service tablets, data collection terminals) with the possibility of scaling up to 10,000 units. Support for heterogeneous equipment has been confirmed for devices on Windows OS, Astra Linux, Android and other platforms.

The dedicated network eliminates the risk of communication channel overload during peak loads or emergencies, which is critical for flight safety. The technology will also accelerate the digitalization of the airport: from ground transportation management to baggage handling. A successful pilot in Sochi could become a model for other transport hubs in the country.
