Unique Unmanned Civilian Vessels to be Created in Russia

The development of unmanned navigation will reduce the influence of the human factor and increase the efficiency of vessel operation

The shipbuilding industry of Russia will in the future begin developing a new vessel design that does not initially involve the presence of a crew. This is stated in the strategy for the development of the shipbuilding industry until 2036 and the outlook until 2050, updated by the Cabinet of Ministers.

The document states that the development of unmanned navigation can reduce the influence of the human factor and increase the efficiency of vessel operation.

Similar pilot projects with unmanned navigation are currently being implemented in Norway and Japan. The creation of a regulatory framework for the implementation of these technologies is one of the priority areas.

The strategy notes that the digitalization of the fleet improves safety at sea, reduces the likelihood of errors, reduces dependence on the human factor, and reduces labor costs.

The First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Denis Manturov, noted that in Russia, by 2036, more than 1,600 civilian vessels will be built.
