Online shopping addiction affects one in four Russians — research

The Federation Council proposes to combat this through financial literacy, not bans

In 2025, online shopping has become not just a common way to buy for Russians, but also a source of addiction in some cases. According to a study by a financial marketplace, the proportion of Russians who regularly make purchases online has increased from 43% to 71%. At the same time, 23% of respondents admitted that they feel addicted to online shopping.

Nevertheless, almost half — 48% — believe that they save money in this way: the online format allows you to compare prices from different sellers and choose the most profitable offers. At the same time, 29% of respondents combine online and traditional purchases, and 32% have almost completely abandoned going to regular stores.

Senator Elena Perminova believes that addiction to online shopping can indeed be a problem, but it should be combated not through bans, but through improving financial literacy. In her opinion, it is important that citizens consciously approach purchases, plan the family budget and correlate expenses with their real income.

Earlier, a law was adopted allowing people to voluntarily impose a self-ban on receiving loans. There are no such legislative measures yet in relation to online shopping, but the country is already discussing the possibility of launching an experiment in which marketplace customers will be able to voluntarily limit their purchases.
